Leinster Autumn Series & Senior Home International: September 29th, Carlingford

Three events in one: the first Leinster League event of the Autumn combined with the annual Senior Home International and the LVO Club Championships on the fantastic Carlingford Mountain on Sunday 29th September!

The SHI runners from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales will have a relay race on Saturday, run by Fingal Orienteers, on Carnawaddy,  just across the valley to the north west of our event on Sunday.  This starts at 1 pm and there will be a maximum of six teams running per country. Planner Val Jones has chosen to start at the top of the forest with immediate access to the complex open moorland on the hill top. Spectators welcome, to cheer on the Irish team! The entry to the forest is close to the Lumpers pub near Ravensdale.

On Sunday the SHI runners will start from 10 am with the other runners following from just after 11 am. The event starts from a parking field at Glenmore which we have used before (not the same place as last October’s event).  Last starts 1 pm (LVO will get an extension)

Travel: The event will be signposted from the main Dundalk to Carlingford/Greenore road (R173) at Bush, about 14 km from Junction 18 on the M1 Motorway.

From the north, it’s probably simpler and quicker to follow the A1/M1 south as far as Junction 18 and follow the directions above rather than to go through Newry and Omeath.

Turn left at Bush, and left again immediately, and follow O-signs for about 5 km. The small track to the field is on the right about 2 km after the church at Glenmore. See map here.

Charity collection: There will be a collection at the gate of the parking field for the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, where the nephew of the landowner continues to receive treatment. Please support this worthy cause.

Entry fees

Start: There will be a single start, about 800 metres from parking and with about 50 metres climb. Finish is about 200 metres from parking.

Rules and regulations: This is a sheep farming area so please, no dogs allowed.  It is an exposed mountain area rising to almost 600 metres and often has its own climate. Weatherproof clothing may be recommended or required on the day, depending on conditions. This will be notified in the assembly area. For satefy reasons, you much carry a whistle for use in an emergency. Whistles will be on sale at assembly. Please enter and leave the field only through the gate: do not climb the fence. Courses will close at 3.30 pm. You must download your SI card even if you do not finish your course.

Recent forestry work near the start has created large log piles. Please keep away from them and don’t let children climb on them.

Registration: Registration forms will be handed out as you enter the parking field. These will have information on courses etc. Please fill in the form and hand the bottom part in to registration.

Map: The map will be 1:10000 scale, 5 metre contours, updated Autumn 2013 by Pat Flanagan. Size A4 for all except Brown and Blue courses which will be closer to A3, waterproof paper. (SHI runners will have 1;15,000 scale).

First aid cover will be provided by the Order of Malta, Dundalk.

Toilets: There will be a portaloo near assembly.
