3ROC news December 1st 2015
As the club Facebook page says, Clodagh (the storm) went orienteering last Sunday at our event at Griffeen Park! The rain fell, the wind blew, and then it improved in time for the 60-odd orienteers who came to the event, a come-and-try-it where most of the people had already done that and had come for more.
Ger Butler’s two courses of 2.6 and 5.3 km gave the entrants a good run-out, – the longer course took the runners outside the park into some of the local housing estates before returning to the grassy areas, while the short course stayed within the park. The results are here.
Last weekend 3ROC M16 Eoin Riordan and W16 Clodagh Moran joined other M/W16’s from the Irish and British teams at a training weekend in Hawkshead in the English Lake District. This has been a very worthwhile trip for Irish runners in previous years and builds confidence for running in complex terrain against other young elites. Meanwhile his namesake, Eoin McCullough, had a good run to finish 2nd at the Regional competition in Aveyron in France on Sunday.
Closer to home, there’s an interesting event this Saturday (December 5th) on a new map of part of the Pine Forest which Ger Butler did for the Juniors: there’s a middle-distance race on Saturday afternoon on the 1:7500 scale map, starting from 2 pm. One course for everyone. It doesn’t seem to be on the fixtures list but it’s definitely on! All money raised will go to support the Junior Team. See the location map here if you don’t know where it is.
On Sunday the 6th, GEN are running a Leinster League event at Trooperstown. The usual courses and start times. There are some details on the IOA Forum here. Trooperstown is near Laragh, on the way to Glendalough: location map here. It’s largely open hillside and the forecast at this stage isn’t good, so dress accordingly!
Fitness training continues on Monday and Thursday evenings at Belfield.
