3ROC Orienteering News 26 September 2019

Orienteering continues this weekend with events at Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, where Waterford Orienteers urban series continues on a new map of this historic town on the River Barrow, and the last Fingal “scatter” event at Newbridge House, Donabate (nowhere near Newbridge in Co. Kildare, so be careful!), both on Sunday. If you’d like to travel further afield there are events at the Long Strand sand dunes in Co. Cork and at Merlin Park Woods in Galway as well. Looking North, there’s an NWOC event at Gransha in Co. Derry on Saturday and events at Castle Archdale, Co. Fermanagh and Slemish College, Ballymena on Sunday so, all-in-all, a busy weekend.           Colm & Mark, Elite class winners

Well done to Colm Moran, running with LVO’s Mark Stephens, on their win in the Elite class at last weekend’s 40th Mourne Mountain Marathon. Their time of 8 hours 30 mins was 38 minutes ahead of second placed Matthew Vokes and Ben Windsor. Orienteers featured prominently in the results of both the two-day and one-day events.

Last Sunday’s Leinster League event at Three Rock attracted about 150 entrants who escaped the heavy overnight rain and had a day running in mild, even sunny, conditions. We had several international runners at the event, including Spanish team member Luis Sanchez Serrano who won the Brown course, followed by Austrian international Anna Nilsson Simkovics, with 3ROC’s Valdas Tilunas third. Other good 3ROC results were Scott Dunne (1st on Red) and get McGrath (3rd on Green).

Reminder – entries for the Northern Ireland Championships on 12th October close on Sunday, 29th September (late entries at higher prices until 4th October). The 2019 Junior Home International will be run in conjunction with the NIOC, with the individual race at Cassy Water near Rostrevor, Co. Down on Saturday 12th and the Relay at Donard forest, Newcastle, on Sunday 13th. There’s also a local event on Sunday after the Relays. See details here. Enter at Fabian4 here.

Running continues on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6.30 at Belfield.
