3ROC news January 4th 2015
Happy New Year everyone! We hope you enjoyed Christmas and the St Stephen’s Day event on Three Rock, even if the weather was against us. Particular thanks to all the helpers.
Sad news on the day of the event, though, that GEN’s Mick Kellett had died that morning: may he rest in peace. He was a very individual person, with a twinkle in his eye, a story for everyone and a pipe firmly clenched between his teeth. He was involved in setting up the Kerry and the Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue teams and was a regular runner at IMRA events.
Our next event is the first Dublin by Night competition on Saturday 10th January in the Phoenix Park. Start times from 6 to 7 pm. There will be two courses (provisionally about 8 km and 4 km with not too much climb). Start is at the Garda Sports Grounds, across the main road opposite the Polo Grounds, where we will have shelter, light and (hopefully) hot drinks. For insruance reasons, night orienteering is only for M/W16 and above. The Park is a gentle-ish introduction to this great variant on orienteering. Bring a headlamp if you have one. More details shortly, either here or on our facebook or twitter pages.
The remaining DBN night-O events are at Deerpark, Mount Merrion (postponed from Jan 17th: date in February to be confirmed), Ballinascorney (Jan 24th), Bushy Park (Jan 31st), Glendoo(Feb 7th) and the final event on Feb 14th (CNOC – location to be confirmed).
There isn’t much activity in Leinster during January (just some night-O and CNOC’s event at Donadea on the 25th), but the first post-Christmas Leinster League event is at Djouce on February 8th, run by DUO who are marking their 40th anniversary. There’s a relay on the Curragh the day before too – see full details and entry form here.
For your diary: the 3ROC AGM will be on Friday 13th February in the Ballinteer area.
That’s all for now …
