Clarabeg orienteering Sunday 21st April 2013

Our Spring series event is this Sunday, 21st April, at Clarabeg, near Laragh, Co. Wicklow. See travel directions here.

The Irish Championships are just two weeks away so this is a good warm-up for that event. The Clarabeg area is suitable for beginners and novices as well as experienced orienteers, so bring your friends!

Pat Flanagan has planned the following courses:

Spring Cup No.6
Brown               9.0 km    320m
Blue                   6.5 km    295m
Green               4.9 km     230m
Light Green    3.9 km    160m
Orange             2.9 km     75m
Yellow             1.9 km      30m

Pre-registration: Please pre-register for the event to make the on-the-day administration easier. Pre-register here before 18:00 on Saturday. You can of course just turn up on the day and register at the event, but it does make it easier if you have registered beforehend. If you register and decide not to come, that’s fine.

Start times are 11.00 to 1.00 pm and the start is 800m from registration. Sportident timing will be used and the map has just been revised and extended for the event. The forest roads have been improved by Coillte so parking should be easy, and the forest has been thinned and made more runnable.

The area covers both Trooperstown Hill and the forest to the south, leading down towards the Vale of Clara. In the event of bad weather, competitors going on the open hillside may be required to wear suitable rain jackets. Irish orienteering rules require competitors to bring a whistle as a safety precaution.

You can see an earlier map (2009) of the area on Routegadget here. Maps will be waterproof and the courses will be pre-printed.

Come early and you could visit Glendalough or the nearby ClaraLara Fun Park afterwards.

SAFETY NOTICE: There are some large log piles in the forest as Coillte are currently extracting timber. Parents are requested not to let children on or near these log piles and to warn them against climbing on them. Competitors on the Orange and Yellow courses will pass some of the log piles.
