Summer Orienteering 2018
Summer O-plans
There’s plenty of orienteering on over the summer, even a Leinster League event in August.
You may not have heard that our traditional three Tuesdays in the Phoenix Park are not on in August this year but we’ll have three equally good Tuesday evening events in Dublin parks instead.
Tuesday 7th August – Griffeen Park, Lucan; 14th August – Cabinteely Park; 21st August – St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. Start times 6.30 to 7.30 pm. See the IOA Fixtures page here.
Here are a few other highlights:
The CNOC summer series continues on Tuesdays in the Kildare and Wicklow area, finishing up on Tuesday 19th June with the Hollywood barbecue event.
The Shamrock O-Ringen in Cork and Kerry on June 2-3-4 is this year preceded by an urban sprint in Killarney on June 1st.
Looking North, LVO run a series of Wednesday evening events around Belfast and NWOC run a series of Thursday evening events towards Derry, and LVO are hosting their Tollymore Weekend on June 22/23 with a sprint at Ballynahinch on Friday evening and a colour event at the Silent Valley on Saturday 23rd – a chance for the Irish team to either brush up on their navigation or risk injury just before the European Youth Champs in Bulgaria!
There’s an EYOC Tour where anyone can run on the EYOC maps in Bulgaria, and a similar opportunity at JWOC in Hungary, World University Champs in Finland and the World Champs in Latvia. Congratulations again to Clodagh Moran, selected for JWOC, and Aidan McCullough selected for EYOC. Well done!
June 16th sees the 21st Setanta Rogaine in Wicklow, using Barry Dalby’s new 1:25000 scale map and the same weekend there will be a group of 3ROC members running at the Jukola and Venla relays in Finland. The Rogaine will have a 6-hour and a 24-hour race.
We’ll have 3ROC runners at the World Masters Championships in Denmark (6-13 July) and also at one of the biggest competitions in the world, the Swedish O-Ringen 5-Day from July 21-27 on the “High Coast” on the Baltic, in what looks like fantastic terrain. In July the OO Cup in the Jura mountains in Eastern France will have a large contingent of Irish, particularly juniors.
The Lakes 5-Day in the English Lake District runs from 29th July to 3rd August (see here);
In August, as already mentioned, 3ROC will have three Tuesday evening events.
On 12th August Setanta are running a Leinster League event at Cushbawn, Co. Wicklow – an experiment to see if there is a demand for League events over the summer.
The full range of big international competitions can be found at WorldofO here.
In September we start with the Fingal Scatter Series and our first 3ROC event is a Leinster League event on a new map of Clarabeg on September 23rd (note the change of date), a week after the London City Race (where we’ll also have runners …)
Finally, we have offered our friends in GEN the use of the Three Rock/Ticknock map for a Leinster League event on 7th October and we have a fund-raising event in the Phoenix Park on 14th October, to raise money for a school-building project in Zambia.
Watch the 3ROC Facebook page for news, updates and orienteering info over the summer. We’ll be back after the summer with training, maps and events for you …
Finally, good luck to all 3ROC members sitting exams this summer!
